First thing to consider
To begin, start thinking about the size and terrain type, of your lawn!
Think about a tennis court, and compare it to your lawn size. Is your lawn half the size of a tennis court? Then it's going to be considered small. Is it the same size? Medium! Or is it larger? Well, my friend, you are having a large lawn.
If you have a small and medium-sized lawn (or less than half an acre), go for a push mower, otherwise choose a riding lawn mower (tractor)!
Once you've made your decision between a push and a riding mower, you then need to choose between different types of lawn mowers by thinking about the terrain of your lawn – is your lawn hilly or flat? Does it have many obstacles, such as flowerbeds and trees?
Different types of push mowers
Modern push lawnmowers come in lots of varieties, but generally speaking, we can fit most of them into 3 main categories: manual-reel, traditional push, and self-propelled.
Manual-reel mowers require no energy to propel them forward – the work is done entirely by you. As you push it, the grass is cut by a series of curved blades. This option is cheap and the most environmentally-conscious.
Upkeep: You will occasionally need to sharpen and adjust the bladeblades.
Recommended for: Small lawn only.
Self-propelled push mowers (Our most recommended push mower type)
These movers are extremely low-effort due to the fact that they can, for the most part, move on their own. They are great for hilly terrain, and work best on larger lawns. They come in gas and electric versions, with 3 main types currently available.
Front-wheel drive: The drive wheels are in the front, making the mower easy to turn. This type works best on level terrain.
Rear-wheel drive: The drive wheels are in the back, meaning that there’s more traction at the center of the mower. This type works well on hilly terrain.
All-wheel drive: By providing power to all four wheels, this type works well on all terrain types. However, it is difficult to move around when turned off.
Upkeep: Electric models require occasionally blade sharpening while gas mowers need regular tune-ups and the right oil to use.
Recommended for: Medium lawn, most terrains.
If you've decided to choose a manual-reel mower, then you don't need to keep on reading the next section, as it is completely about gas and electric mowers. Just click here to skip to my guide and reviews of top 5 best reel mowers.
Gas or Electric?
Push mowers and self-propelled mowers come in both gas and electric models.
Electric mowers are, in most cases, the ideal choices for small-scale applications. They usually start with the flip of a switch, making them a little more convenient. They are quiet and clean, especially when compared to gas mowers. They come in two varieties – corded and cordless.
Corded models have an unlimited runtime, but their cord can make things difficult for people with large lawns. This is because they always require to operate from a nearby source of electric power. Cordless models have greater mobility and can be used for large scale mowing since they rely on rechargeable batteries. Battery charge times vary from 30 minutes to a full 3 hours. If you’re going for a cordless model, make sure to choose one with a lithium ion battery with a high voltage (40 or 80 volts.)
Gasoline-powered mowers are, on the other hand, installed with engines. These make them boast a higher rate of endurance power than their electric counterparts, thus more suitable for large scale mowing as well as lawns with overgrown grass. Most crank with a pull start, which can be irritating, although some models now feature an electric starter.
Due to the fact they do not require to be connected to an electric power source to operate and can cut a lot more grass at once, gas mowers are much loved and recommended by me. However, compared to the electric mowers, the gasoline-powered are more expensive to operate and maintain. They need the right type of fuel to operate correctly and are a lot heavier than electric mowers, and require more effort to maneuver, which is where a self-propelled function comes in handy.

Types of Lawn Mowers
Lawn mowers are available in varying types and models. To ensure that you get the right choice for your application there is need therefore to shop around ad learn the available models and their advantages in regard to the type of application you need. They may be classified in a variety of factors that include:
1. By Energy Source
Lawn mowers are determined by the type of power they use. There are the electric and gasoline powered mowers. The electric mowers are, in most cases, the ideal choices for small-scale applications. This is because they always require to operate from a nearby source of electric power. This means that they cannot be used for large scale mowing. The gasoline-powered mowers are, on the other hand, installed with engines. These make them more powerful when compared to the electric models. They can easily be used for large scale mowing due to the fact they do not require to be connected to an electric power source to operate. However, compared to the electric mowers, the gasoline-powered mowers are more expensive to operate and maintain. The other type is the hand operated lawn mowers. These are ideal for small scale mowing. Their main advantage is they do not require any powering other than the human labor. However, when used in large-scale applications the mower can be tiring and as well time consuming.
2. By Rotation
Cylinder or reel mowers are created with a number of blades. The blades rotate fast forcing the grass over a cutting bar. This is ideal for large-scale applications owing to its capability to work fact and hence the ability to cover wide grounds in minimal time. This lawn mower has capability to cut the glass with the cleanest cut. This allows the grass to heal quickly hence the most ideal. It also allows to a smooth looking and even surface of the cut grass. It is however important to ensure that the blades used for this mower are checked regularly so that the space between the blades and the cutter is maintained effectively and never to allow grass to pass through without being cut. The mowers can either be gasoline or electric powered.
The rotary mowers are made of one blade. The blade normally rotates on a vertical axis at high speeds and thus using the impact to cut the grass. Unlike the reel mower, the rotary mowers normally causes splits and uneven cutting of the grass and does not always result in a smooth cut as would otherwise be achieved using the reels mowers. When cutting wet grass, the rotary mowers will normally clog with grass and thus making it ineffective and will normally not cut the grass effectively. They are also difficult to use on uneven grounds and will normally result on clogging among other issues. To ensure they perform effectively, the rotary mowers require regular sharpening and removal of clogged grass.
3. Robotic Mowers
In large sections of a lawn, it is a real difficult task to move around mowing. It is in such an area where robotic mowers come in handy. These are typical mowers mostly electric charges and controlled by use of robotic devices. The mower operates within a designated area and rests upon reaching a recharge point. They are installed with sensors and thereby reducing human interaction when at work.
4. Ride-on Mowers
Over long stretches ride on mowers are used. These are more sophisticated and operate more like powered carts. This means to operate them you are required to ride and help navigate over the area that is being mowed. These are more ideal for large fields e.g. golf courses.
Choosing a Lawn Mower
Individual needs vary between individuals in regard to mowing. In this regard, there are a number of important issues that require consideration when choosing a lawn mower. The size of the field being mowed is of paramount importance. While small areas will require simple mowing equipment, such would be tedious when used for large lawns. Therefore, a small electric lawn mower may be more ideal for a home compound while it may not be ideal for a golf course whereas a robotic mower may be more ideal for the golf course over the home compound. Cost is another factor, the cost of acquiring and running the lawn mower is essential for consideration. This is because different mowers will come at varying costs in reference to their designs, power and other advantages and capabilities that will come with it. This also goes for the operation costs.
Lawn mowing is one of the essential activities that you require to maintain a perfect home. This means that you will always have to look forward to perfect results. For this to be effective there is need to ensure that you acquire the best lawn mower for the job. Before selecting the equipment, you will be required to exactly understand your needs and this will guide you in choosing the right equipment. You should also consider having a piece of equipment that you will be able to maintain and as well operate effectively to ensure that on every use you get the desired results.
