Baby swings are one of the few baby toys that’s almost guaranteed to be on your wish list. After all, they serve so many purposes. They keep baby occupied, contained, and calm – three things that we struggle with as parents.
However, not all baby swings are created equal. There are many different features provided by different brands, with some being more common (and arguably “standard”) and others that are more on the “premium” end.
Some of the things you should consider when deciding on a baby swing to purchase:
- Does it utilize multiple swing speeds? Sometimes you want to rock your baby softly, while other times you want to let them swing. The ideal swing will allow for both functions.
- Does it have built-in toys? Most baby swings will offer either a toy bar or a mobile. The one that’s best for you will depend, in part, on your baby’s age.
- Is it battery-powered or corded? Many swings offer both power options. If the swing you’re considering does not, you’ll need to decide which is more important to you.
- How portable is it? Ideally, you want your swing to move easily from one room to another. The ability to remove certain parts to wash them is also helpful.
- What about the music? Most baby swings will play a melody when in use. Higher end swings are likely to offer multiple melodies, as well as volume controls.
- Is it reasonably priced? We all want what’s best for our baby – but if the better option is also less expensive, it’s a winner.
Top Baby Swings
So, what are our choices for the top three baby swings?
Graco DuetSoothe Swing + Rocker
Graco is one of the leaders in the baby industry no matter what section you’re looking in. The DuetSoothe Infant Swing + Rocker is no different! With three different swinging positions and a removable rocker seat, this one is sure to captivate your baby no matter what his preference is. In fact, they offer six different swing speeds, too.
When the rocker is removed from the swing, there is a gentle vibration feature that can help lull your baby to sleep. There are two vibration speeds and two reclining positions to help with the calming, too. And just in case you’re not near an outlet to use the AC adaptor (included), this swing can be powered by 5 D-cell batteries (not included).
This swing is certain to be comfortable – which you’ll be able to see just by looking at the deep, cozy seat. But Graco understands that you also worry about your baby’s safety – which is why they’ve included a no-worries five-point safety harness.
But what about stimulating their development? The DuetSoothe offers a fun mobile of toys to encourage stretching and grabbing. This helps with important muscle development. For the music-loving baby, this swing offers an impressive ten melodies and five nature sounds – for a total of 15 listening options! This is sure to please.
While this product represents the highest end of our price range, the number of features has customers impressed even with the price tag. Particularly once you factor in the dual-purpose design, this is definitely one of those times you get what you pay for.
Fisher Price X7345 My Little Snugapuppy Cradle and Swing
Another of the “standards” in the baby products industry is Fisher Price. Since 1930, they have aspired to create toys that “appeal to the imagination, that do something new and surprising and funny.” 85 years later, they’re still doing it, and the My Little Snugapuppy is no exception.
This cradle and swing combo offers a fair amount of customization for your little one’s needs. Two swinging motions (front-to-back and side-to-side), many seating positions (left, right, and forward facing, as well as reclined or upright), and six different swinging speeds are sure to satisfy any baby. 16 different sound options help keep baby’s brain stimulated, too.
For a more imaginative experience, this swing also has a mobile of “dancing” animals, just like the Graco swing – but this one also has a mirrored globe in the middle to help baby discover herself. Additionally, this swing has a detachable teething toy. You can never have enough teething toys!
In terms of portability, this swing stands ahead. The frame is made from steel (so it’s sturdy and durable), but they fold so that you can carry it easier from room to room. Just like the Graco baby swing, you can power it through either the AC adaptor (included) or 4 D-cell batteries (not included).
Unfortunately, the covers on this particular swing are not easily removable, so you will have to spot-clean any messes (unlike the Graco product, which offers a removable, machine-washable cover), but for the price difference, many parents might not mind.
This swing is currently the #1 seller in stationary baby swings on Amazon, and for good reason. It’s incredibly cozy, super adorable, and has all the features that most parents want from a baby swing – at a very fair price.
Comfort & Harmony 60194 Cozy Kingdom Portable Swing
If your budget is an important factor for you, maybe a lesser-known swing could be the right answer for you. After all, there’s no rule that says you need to buy the most expensive swing – if you can get the features you want at a price you can afford, you have the best product for you.
Comfort & Harmony might not have a globally-recognizable name, but their Cozy Kingdom Portable Swing is an impressive find at a more impressive price. Much smaller than many other swings, this one is truly easy to take along with you anywhere – and just in case you need to, it also folds up for easy storage.
WhisperQuiet technology makes sure that the motor isn’t disturbing to your baby, allowing him to listen to the six original melodies that are included. The easy-to-use volume control and auto-off timer make it even easier to adapt it to your own needs. It’s best if you can adjust everything before baby falls asleep, as they can make a loud noise.
This doesn’t have as many safety features as some of the other models so it’s very important that you keep an eye on your baby, and it’s best to wait until he can support his head on his own. (Although the swing is a good size for newborns, there is no structured back to it, and the straps are not the best.) Of course, it’s unwise to leave your baby unattended in the first place – so this shouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience.
There are a few drawbacks to this swing, which you’ll have to determine if they’re worthy of the price you save. This one doesn’t have a variety of speeds like the other two do, nor can you change baby’s position. It also can’t be plugged into an outlet, but a single set can last for about 30 active hours before you’ll need to change them. It’s definitely not the most high-featured swing out there – but for half the size and a third of the costs, how many features do you need?
